Toenail Fungus & Laser Treatment
Toenail fungus is a very common condition affecting the feet. It
affects almost 25 million persons around the country and is one of the
most common foot complaints presenting to podiatric offices. Fungus
infection of the nail can cause discoloration and thickening of the
nail as well as changes in nail texture. If you have a fungus infection
there are a few treatments available.
There are no treatments that are 100 percent effective. Oral
medications for fungus infection, like Lamisil or Grispeg, treat the
fungus infection from within by targeting fungus infection. This
option may be effective however there is a small risk of liver damage.
Blood test are performed to see if one is a good candidate for this therapy. A new recent treatment for this fungus is the use
lasers. So far there were a few studies that show very promising conclusions.
These lasers
work by killing the fungus but also leaving the nail and other foot
tissue undamaged .Clinical trials conducted early this year showed some
success in patients growing healthy nails. Studies performed thus far
are promising but its still too early to determine side effects,
success rates. The treatment is not covered by insurances.
Most
insurances companies see this latest treatment as cosmetic.
Treatments range anywhere from $500 to $1000. Results are not
guaranteed.
