Neuroma

A tingling, burning or numbness of the toes can result from the impingement of the nerve lying between the third and fourth toes. Once the nerve becomes inflamed, it enlarges and thickens. A neuroma is essentially a nerve that has become enlarged. This condition may be aggravated by high heel shoes or shoes that are too narrow, which cram the toes together.

A neuroma is diagnoses by physical exam and ultrasound or a magnetic resonance imaging study (MRI). These tests are very helpful in showing inflammation of the nerve in between the third and fourth toes.

This condition may improve with wearing proper shoes. Special custom made inserts or orthotics may also help to alleviate the pressure there. If pain still persists, cortisone injections may be used to reduce pain or alcohol injected into the area may be used to destroy a portion of the nerve.

If feet are still painful, there is a surgery that can be performed to cut out nerve. There are endoscopic procedures that utilize minimal incision to cut the nerve. Cryosurgery is another minimally invasive surgical procedure used for treatment of neuromas. This procedure uses ice injections to freeze the neuroma. Generally, most people respond to surgery, however recurrence is possible.
